This week Bellwether has their annual 10-day event where they take over the city and place art everywhere around Bellevue. It’s always a super dope event filled with a lot of the homies who create amazing work. Last year I was invited to show some paintings and I got the invite to come back to show work again, but this time, I’m bringing in sculptures. I’ve been exploring working with broken crowns and pairing them with different elements.
So far, I’ve paired them with iron oxide, chains and most recently boxing gloves. The idea behind the crushed crown deals with the pursuit and destruction of power. Often, the crown is seen as the highest position or place possible to attain. Once you have it, you’re a marked person that everyone is coming after.
I’m envisioning what happens once you take the mantel piece and destroy it. What happens then? Does it still carry the same value and significance? Who would want a crushed crown? This represents a broken system which is what we inhabit and always have lived in.
